THE AMAZING WOMEN :ZAINAB AL-GHAZALI
Introduction
Zainab al-Ghazali al-Jubaili was the Muslim activist that willingly sacrifices her all for the sake of Islam, the truth that she deeply believes. She was the leader of Jemaah Muslimat which is the staunch supporter of Ikhwan Muslimin in Egypt.
During the era of the President Jamal Abdul Nasser’s administration, not only thousand but almost a million of Ikhwan Muslimin’s members were prisoned and tortured. Zainab al-Ghazali with such a pure heart tried the best to lighten the burden that felt by the family of prisoned Ikwan Muslimin’s members. A lot of properties aid as well as spiritual aid were given to them.
A lot of plans were plotted by President Jamal Abdul Nasser to kill her. Finally she was caught and jailed and from that moment, series of torture towards her began. But the Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wataala saved her. Without sympathy and empathy, Precident Jamal Abdul Nasser ordered his army to torture her with the most devastating torture. She was treated and punished like a man.
She was beaten up by stick, whip, hanging by leg of upper side, housed with a lot of wild dog, doused for whole day in a water prison, jailed with mice and a lot more. However she faces all that with a lot of confidence towards Allah’s promise.
Al last, she was send out from jail in 1971. The spirit as well as confidence towards the aid from Allah in order to face hustle and bustle in life made her as a role model or qudwah to the future mujahidin until the day of Hereafter.
Background of Zainab Al-Ghazali
Zainab Al-Ghazali was born in Al-Bihira 1917. She comes from the descent of Umar Al-Khatab and Hassan Bin Ali bin Abi Talib. She was married for twice. Her second husband’s name is Al-Marhum Muhammad Salim. Her husband was one of the ulama’ in Egypt and gained respectations from a lot of Muslim. She was divorced by her first husband because her husband did not allow her to active and contribute her life in dakwah. She was died on Wednesday, 3 August 2005 at 88 years old. She was the prominent writer and the teacher of the Muslim Brotherhood and founder of the Muslim Women's Association (1936-64). Her father was an Al-Azhar-educated independent religious teacher and cotton merchant. He encouraged her to become an Islamic leader by giving the example of Nusaybah bint Ka'ab al-Maziniyah, a woman who had fought alongside the Prophet (SAWS) in the Battle of Uhud.
History of her dakwah
Entering the fertile scene of the Egyptian nationalist/women’s movement, Zainab al-Ghazali gained an early exposure to women’s activism and participation in public space. Joining the Egyptian Feminist Union when she was no more than eighteen, she was exposed to the ideology of Egyptian women who favored emulation of the west and a secularization of women’s roles in society. However, al-Ghazali quickly became frustrated with the EFU’s methods, believing that its members rejected Islam as a guide to defining the role of women in society. She quit the organization, and went on to establish the Jamiat Al-Sayyidat-al-Muslimeen, or,Muslim Ladies Association in 1936. Correcting what al-Ghazali had seen to be the fatal flaw of the EFU, she and the MLA encouraged women to seek religion as a means to personal agency and as a source of advancement.1 That are major women's charitable organization which rendered valuable service to the poor , orphans and the underprivileged. Although she had acquaintance with Shaikh Hasan al-Banna, the founder of the Ikhwan, since the late 30's and actively participated in many Islamic programs , she formally joined the Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwan al-Muslimun) in 1948. After the assassination of Hassan al-Banna in 1949 , she played a major role in the re-organizitation of the Muslim Brotherhood While al-Ghazali insisted upon the independence of the MLA from the Muslim Brotherhood, she was closely affiliated with the larger Islamist organization and was among the top leaders within the Egyptian da’wah movement. While specifically concerned with the role of women in society, al-Ghazali dedicated
herself to the da’wah movement as a whole. She criticized “westernized” feminists for devoting themselves only to “women’s issues,” arguing that not only was it impossible to separate the issues of women from those of society at large, but that in fact such specifications only weakened the community and ignored comprehensive ailments of society. As a da’iya, al- Ghazali was passionate about spreading Islam to all sectors of society, as well as devoted to teaching the benefits that she believed Islam would bring to Egypt.
The suffering moments’ History
On 20th of August in 1965, Friday, Zainab Al- Ghazali was caught by army of Jamal Abdul Nasser. Starting from that time the moment of suffering of Zainab Al-Ghazali begins. Zainab Al-Ghazali faced a lot of tortures in that prison. One of the torture is she was abandoned in her cell for six days without get any food, drink and permission to go to the toilet. In her book, The Return of Pharaoh, she said:
"I remained in my cell for six consecutive days: from Friday 20th August to Thursday 26th August 1965. My cell door, during these six days was never opened. I was given neither food, drink, allowed to go to the toilet nor any contact with the outside world, except my warder who, now and then, peeped through the small hole in my cell door. You can imagine, dear reader, how a person can live in such circumstances." ( Zainab Al-Ghazali, Return of Parol : 23)
Another torture is she was caught into one cell that filled with wild dogs. All the wild dogs were very hungry and pounce to Zainab Al-Ghazali. Zainab Al-Ghazali just willingly and pray for Allah to save herself. A miracle happened when Zainab Al-Ghazali went out from the cell without any hurts. Subhanallah, there was no blood at all at her clothes and her clothes still in clean condition.Beside that, she also faced the hard time when she was beaten and strike by the taghut (army of Jamal Abd Nasser) with crosier and whip for more than 500 hundreds times at one time. A miracle could be seen through how the woman like Zainab Al-ghazali was able to face all the beaten for a long time.
Description of the persecution on her in prison:
"The next moment the door was locked and a bright light switched on. Now their purpose was revealed; the room was full of dogs! I could not count how many!
"Scared, I closed my eyes and put my hands to my chest. Within second the snarling dogs were all over me and I could feel their teeth tearing into every part of my body. Clenching my hands tight into my armpits, I began to recount the Names of Allah, beginning with 'O Allah! O Allah!'…. I expected that my clothes would be thoroughly stained with blood, for I was sure the dogs had bitten every part of my body. But, incredulously, there was not a single bloodstain on my clothes, as if the dogs had been in my imagination only."

Then, she was also caught into the cell that have more than hundred of mice. Zainab al-ghazali still able to pray for her safe to face that situations and conditions. Other than that, one of the army of Jamal Abd Nasser tried to rap Zainab Al-Ghazali. But Allah prevented Zainab Al-ghazali by giving her the intention to strangle that guy. The guy collapsed and died at the moment.
Imprisonment and torture, however, never broke her staunch will and emerged stronger than ever. She left behind a legacy of uphill struggle to defend Islam and a reputation of a Muslim feminist, who undoubtedly replaced secular and liberal ideologies with Islamic values.

Contribution
She is among the top leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, a social organization which seeks to Islamize Egyptian society and government. The year is 1966. A middle-aged woman sits in an Egyptian military prison, awaiting the torture sessions that have become part of her daily routine. She recites verses from the Qur’an, sentences of classical Arabic which have been repeated endlessly, but which never lose meaning. Bismillah al-Rahman al Raheem 4 al-Ghazali emerged into Egyptian society at a time of great upheaval for women and the nation as a
whole.
As Muslims, nowadays we are provided with a lot of facilities and opportunities that should be used wisely to spread the teachings of Islam. We must not take for granted what Zainab al-Ghazali worked for the sake of Islam especially women that still assumed as sex slave in some undeveloped countries.
Conclussion
Finally, we can conclude that Zainab Al-Ghazali is one of the good preachers that are our role models in Da’yah Islamiah. She has strength, intelligent, good thinker and never gives up in delivering a true Islam. She tried to bring back all Muslims in Egypt to practice Syariah Islam fully and always refer to Al-Quran & As-Sunnah. She had faced a lot of problems and suffering in da’wah. Her spirits in delivering Islam should be respected. She was contributing her life, energy, wealth, time in order to rise up Islam in their country.
